Face Shape Calculator
Determine your face shape from real measurements or a quick visual quiz โ then get tailored hairstyle, glasses, brow, and makeup recommendations.
Use a flexible measuring tape or a ruler held at arm’s length in front of a mirror. Any unit works โ we only use ratios.
How the Face Shape Calculator Works
The tool has four interconnected tabs:
1. Measure โ Enter four key measurements (forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width, face length), chin shape, jaw angularity, and forehead-to-jaw taper. The calculator scores all seven face shapes against your inputs using ratio thresholds derived from classic face-shape analysis, and shows the winner with a confidence percentage plus the top 4 matches. Includes preset examples for Oval, Round, Square, Heart, and Diamond.
2. Quick Quiz โ If you don’t have a tape measure, answer 5 visual questions (widest point, face length, jawline, forehead, widest zone). The quiz scores each shape against your answers and returns the best match with a confidence level.
3. Browse Shapes (Recommendations) โ Once a shape is detected, this tab renders tailored recommendations in four categories: hairstyle (do/avoid), glasses frames (do/avoid), eyebrow shape (do/avoid), and makeup techniques (do/avoid). It also produces a quick reference table with the top pick from each category.
4. How it works โ Explains the ratio-based approach, shows a clickable cheat sheet of all seven shapes (each with an SVG preview), and covers the golden rule of styling: balance, don’t fight.
What Is a Face Shape Calculator?
A face shape calculator is a tool (like the one I built) that helps you determine your face shape oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong, or triangle by analyzing the relative proportions of your facial features. Once you know your shape, you can make smarter personal style decisions.
Why Face Shape Matters
Your face shape influences:
- Hairstyles โ which cuts, bangs, and layers flatter you most
- Sunglasses & eyeglasses โ frame shapes that balance your features
- Beard styles (for those who grow facial hair)
- Makeup techniques โ contouring and highlighting placement
- Hat styles โ brims and crowns that suit your proportions
How Do You Determine Face Shape?
The core method is comparing four key measurements:
| Measurement | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| Forehead width | How wide your upper face is |
| Cheekbone width | The widest point of your mid-face |
| Jaw width | How wide/angular your lower face is |
| Face length | Vertical proportion from hairline to chin |
From these, you calculate ratios:
- Forehead รท Cheekbone โ Is your forehead wider, narrower, or balanced?
- Jaw รท Cheekbone โ Is your jaw narrow, balanced, or wide?
- Length รท Cheekbone โ Is your face short, moderate, or long?
The Seven Face Shapes at a Glance
| Shape | Key Trait |
|---|---|
| Oval | Balanced, slightly longer than wide |
| Round | Soft curves, similar widths, short length |
| Square | Strong jaw, balanced widths, not too long |
| Heart | Wide forehead, narrow pointed jaw |
| Diamond | Cheekbones widest, narrow forehead & jaw |
| Oblong | Much longer than wide, balanced widths |
| Triangle | Jaw wider than forehead |
